Usually translated as "Hell is other people," This line is a metaphor for the idea in existentialism that everything that is not the "self" is a construct of relative consciousness, and that we prove the existence of the "self" by contrasting it with the "other," and that other people's "self" is the limit of our "self." ...

The good thing is that you can take the line out of context (which was how it got famous in the first place) and have it mean that people are idiots, and hanging around idiots is hell.
